n8n Cloud vs Self-Hosted vs Managed Hosting: Real Cost Comparison

Every n8n cost comparison eventually runs into the same problem: two of the three options don’t have a single number you can point to. Here’s what each path actually costs, invoice and otherwise.

n8n Cloud: predictable, until you outgrow the tier

n8n Cloud’s cost is the easiest to state and the hardest to predict long-term. Pricing is metered by execution count, and — as covered in our breakdown of execution limits — a handful of frequently-polling automations can push you into a much higher tier than your actual workload would suggest. For light, occasional use, this is genuinely the cheapest option on the table. For anything running often, the bill scales with trigger frequency, not value delivered.

Self-hosted on a VPS: cheap on the invoice, expensive off it

A VPS capable of running n8n well — 2–4 vCPU, 4–8GB RAM — typically costs somewhere in the $20–60/month range depending on provider and region. That number is real, but it’s not the whole cost.

The part that doesn’t appear on any invoice: your own time. Provisioning Docker, configuring backups, setting up a reverse proxy and TLS, hardening the OS, and then — every month, indefinitely — watching release notes, applying patches, and verifying backups still restore. Estimates for this ongoing maintenance commonly land around one to two hours a month under normal conditions, plus the unscheduled time when something breaks at an inconvenient hour. Price your own time at any reasonable rate and the “cheap” VPS stops looking cheap the moment you account for what keeps it running safely.

Managed hosting: a flat fee that includes the maintenance

Managed n8n hosting sits between the two: a flat monthly price, similar in shape to the VPS cost, but the provisioning, patching-support-infrastructure, backups, and monitoring are included rather than being your unpaid second job. You still control your own n8n version and when it updates — what you’re paying for is everything around that decision being handled.

Putting real numbers side by side

For a single production instance with moderate, steady usage:

n8n Cloud Self-hosted VPS Managed hosting
Sticker price Scales with executions $20–60/mo + your time Flat monthly fee
Unlimited executions No Yes Yes
Who patches n8n n8n You You (infrastructure supports it safely)
Who handles backups n8n You Included, tested monthly
Isolation Shared Yours entirely Single-tenant, dedicated
Ongoing time cost Near zero 1–2 hrs/month + incidents Near zero

The honest framing

If your volume is low and infrequent, n8n Cloud’s convenience is worth its price — you’re not near any execution ceiling, and there’s genuinely nothing to manage. If you’re technical, have the time, and want maximum control, self-hosting is cheap in dollars and expensive in attention. If your automations are business-critical or client-facing and you don’t want to be the one watching for the next CVE, managed hosting trades a modest premium over bare VPS pricing for removing the part of self-hosting that actually causes incidents.
